Yoga and Surfing are perfect partners.
Instead of beginning the day with Yoga I was trying to find a wave. Every beach back to Rio was flat. Whilst checking the surf at a recommended spot, I found some great street art providing a fun spot to practice a few grounding and balance postures.
In the above pic I am practicing Vrksasana know as Tree pose. Its a perfect Yoga posture to help with preparing the legs and core and mind for a surf session.
Practicing Yoga and Surfing are both amazing flow activities. This means we are able to be more present. We have heightened awareness and usually feel more calm and clear after the activity. Of course though, it is still all about how our mind interprets the experience. Sometimes I get frustrated when I can’t hold a posture. Similarly I used to get really frustrated when I couldn’t catch any waves or felt like I had a “bad session”. I guess over time with my yoga and meditation experience, I realised it wasn’t about catching the best wave, or finding the perfect conditions. It was about being in the moment, without the judgement, but enjoying the beauty and the ferocity of the ocean. Also it gives me the chance to literally sit there. I can Meditate and practice patience whilst being in nature.
Other similarities are that in both Yoga and surfing you are working with the body. Strengthening it, utilising flexibility, slowly and gradually challenging yourself and building confidence. These are my two favourite activities and since it is so cold here in Melbourne, Yoga every day will help not only keep the doctor away, but also Abbie a little more sane 🙂
